Varane joined Italian side Como on a free transfer in July but suffered a knee injury on his debut against Sampdoria last month.
The centre-back says he will stay at the club in a non-playing role.
Varane started his career at French club Lens but spent only one season in the senior team before moving to Real Madrid in 2011.
During his impressive 10-year stint in Madrid, he won 18 trophies, including three La Liga titles and four Champions League titles.
In the summer of 2021, Varane transferred to Manchester United for an initial £34m, where he made 95 appearances across all competitions, despite injury setbacks. He added the Carabao Cup to his accolades in 2022, and his last match for the club was the FA Cup final win over Manchester City at Wembley in May.
Varane made his international debut for France in 2013, earning 93 caps. He was part of the squad that won the 2018 World Cup, the 2021 Nations League, and reached the 2022 World Cup final.
Reflecting on his career, he said, “I’ve faced countless challenges, but now is the time to retire, with my final game ending in a trophy win at Wembley.”

“I have no regrets and wouldn’t change anything. I’ve achieved more than I ever imagined, but beyond the titles, I’m proud of staying true to my values. I hope I’ve made everyone proud.”
As for what’s next, Varane mentioned, “A new chapter begins off the field. I will remain with Como, just no longer as a player. I’ll share more details soon.”
In April, Varane revealed concerns about the long-term impact of heading the ball, sharing that he once played through a World Cup match in 2014 on “autopilot” after suffering a concussion. He has since advocated for better player protection and awareness regarding these issues.
